What Is a Defined Heel?
A defined heel is a raised heel block with a clear ledge between the heel and the rest of the sole. That ledge catches ladder rungs, holds a stirrup and digs into soft or uneven ground. It is why so many oilfield companies require a defined heel work boot.
Who Needs a Defined Heel
- Oilfield and rig crews climbing ladders, pipe and metal grating
- Ranchers working horseback who need a heel that holds the stirrup
- Construction crews on dirt, gravel and uneven job sites
Spend most of your day on flat concrete? A wedge sole may be more comfortable. Read our guide to defined heel vs. wedge sole work boots.
Defined Heel FAQ
Do defined heel boots come with a safety toe?
Yes. Defined heel work boots come in steel toe, composite toe and soft toe. Pick the toe protection your job requires first, then the heel.
Is a defined heel required in the oilfield?
Many oilfield operators require one because it grips ladder rungs and grating better than a flat sole. Check your company's PPE policy.
