• Felt: the cold-weather and dress hat. The traditional rule is felt from Labor Day to Memorial Day.
• Straw: the summer and work hat. It breathes and shades in the heat.

What the X Rating Means

On felt hats, the X number tells you about fur content and quality within one hat maker's line. A higher X usually means more fur, a denser felt and a hat that holds its shape better in rain. X ratings are not standard between brands, so compare them only within the same maker.

Measure around your head, about an eighth of an inch above your ears and across the middle of your forehead, then match it below.

Between sizes? Go up and snug the fit with a sizing strip under the sweatband.

How should a cowboy hat fit?

Snug all the way around without pressing on your forehead, sitting about an inch above your eyebrows. If it leaves a red line, it is too tight.

How do I take care of a felt hat?

Set it upside down on its crown or hang it, so the brim keeps its shape. Keep it out of a hot truck, since heat can shrink the sweatband. Brush felt in a counter-clockwise direction to clean it.

Which crown and brim shape should I pick?

Can I get a hat fitted in store?
