FR vs AR Clothing: What's the Difference?

All arc-rated (AR) clothing is flame-resistant (FR), but not all FR clothing is arc-rated. What each label means, which standard covers your job, and how to read the tag.

Quick answer: All arc-rated (AR) clothing is flame-resistant (FR), but not all FR clothing is arc-rated. FR fabric resists catching fire and self-extinguishes. AR clothing has also passed an arc flash test and lists an arc rating in cal/cm². Electrical work under NFPA 70E needs AR. Flash fire work (oilfield, gas plants, refineries) calls for NFPA 2112.

FAQ

Is FR clothing the same as arc flash clothing?

No. Arc flash clothing is FR clothing that passed an arc test (ASTM F1959) and carries an arc rating.

Can I wear NFPA 2112 clothing for electrical work?

Only if it also has an arc rating that meets your PPE category. Many FR shirts and jeans list both.

Which CAT do I need?

Your employer's hazard assessment sets it. CAT 2 (8 cal/cm² minimum) is the most common daily level. See our FR rating guide.

Where is the arc rating?

On the label, in cal/cm². No number means the garment is not arc-rated.
