Ariat has been building this softshell since 2003, and the reason it keeps coming back is that it does the boring job well. The face fabric blocks wind and sheds water, a microfleece backing on the inside holds warmth without the bulk of a coat, and six percent elastane means it moves with you when you are throwing hay or reaching across a truck bed. Greater Arm Mobility panels keep the shoulders from binding, and the waist cord and cuffs cinch down when the wind gets up. Zippered hand and chest pockets hold what you carry without dumping it when you bend over. The Phantom colorway runs a subtle Americana-meets-camo print, so it reads a little different than the plain black one everybody else has on.
