Steel Toe vs. Composite Toe vs. Aluminum Toe
| Toe | Pros | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Steel | Thin cap for the protection, usually the lowest price | Heavier, and it carries cold and heat |
| Composite | Non-metallic, lighter, does not carry cold or heat, and will not set off metal detectors | A slightly bulkier toe |
| Aluminum | Lighter than steel with a thin profile | Still metal, so it carries cold and heat |
Any safety toe rated to ASTM F2413 passed the same impact and compression tests, whatever it is made of. Read our full steel toe vs. composite toe guide.
Read the ASTM F2413 Label
- I/C: impact and compression protection for the toe. Every safety toe boot has it.
- EH: electrical hazard protection from the sole.
- Mt: a metatarsal guard over the top of the foot.
- PR: a puncture-resistant plate in the sole.
- SD: static dissipative, for work around sensitive electronics or fuel vapor.
Pick Your Build
- Pull-on (Wellington) or lace-up: pull-ons are quick and have no laces to snag. Lace-ups give more ankle support. See pull-on vs lace-up work boots.
- Heel: a defined heel grips ladder rungs and pipe. A wedge sole is easier on flat concrete. See defined heel vs. wedge sole.
- Waterproof: worth it for mud, wash bays and wet leases.

Safety Toe Boot FAQ
Is composite toe as safe as steel toe?
Yes, when both are rated to ASTM F2413. The rating means the toe passed the same impact and compression tests. The difference is weight, bulk and whether the toe carries cold.
What safety toe do oilfield jobs require?
Most sites ask for an ASTM F2413 safety toe, and many want EH protection and a defined heel for climbing. Check your company's PPE policy for the exact requirement.
Do you take company boot vouchers?
Yes. We run company boot programs with vouchers and allowances. See our employee allocation programs.
Can I get fitted for work boots in store?
Yes. Our Elk City store at 3000 W 3rd St is open Monday through Friday 8 to 6 and Saturday 10 to 5.
